The Art of GYOTAKU

"Gyotaku" (ghi-o-TA-koo) is the Japanese art of hand-rubbed fish prints on fine rice paper. (Gyo means fish; Taku means rubbing.) The art originated in the early 1800s as a way of preserving records of each fisherman's catch.

Florida artist Gregory Aragon holds a Captain's license and makes his living as master of a deep-water fishing vessel. He became fascinated by Gyotaku, studied and mastered the art, and has been making Gyotaku prints for more than two decades. His work is displayed in galleries and private collections in the United States, France and England.

Spanek Enterprises took Aragon's art a step further by preserving these fish prints on the highest quality ceramic platters for a British Culinary television show some years ago. The platters are freezer, oven and dishwasher safe.

The Spaneks are down to the last of their inventory on these platters, with very few remaining and no plans of recreating them.

The French Line - Les Grand Paquebots

Limited Edition Collection of Placemats & Coasters

Commissioned by the French Line Transit Company in 1991, this very limited edition collection of placemats and coasters were created by Spanek Enterprises as a promotional giveaway for the Company to give valued patrons and employees as a Holiday Gift. They were never created for the retail trade, and as such are highly rare and collectible. Capturing six of the French Line’s most famous ocean liners in one classic collection, Les Grands Paquebots also captures the eloquence, majesty and beauty inherent in the illustrious lifestyle these ships represent. Each day on board was a celebration transporting passengers perfumed and dressed by the best French designers. The French Line taught the "French Way of Life", luxury, art, and voluptuousness - deliciously. Gastronomy was the order of the day, yet these ships also served an important role transporting troops and airplanes during WWII.
